Today, May 29th, has been dubbed “529 College Savings Day” due to the date 5-29. I don’t know if Hallmark is behind it, but the more likely story is that it’s the brainchild of a creative marketing person involved in the 529 industry. In any event, Sallie Mae has chosen today to release its study entitled “How America Saves for College.” Among the reported findings are that 92% of parents expect their children to pursue a college degree, and 48% plan to pay for most or all of the cost. And here’s another surprising nugget: 52% are saving the same amount or more for college, despite the recession. The study, conducted with the Gallup organization, has a margin of error of plus/minus 4%.
