As we head into the year’s end, it will interesting to see whether 2008 ends with a bang, a whimper, or maybe just a moan. To take top honors in the worst…year…ever department, it has to beat 1931, when the S&P lost 41.7 percent (not including dividends). In second place was 1937, with a drop of 38.6 percent. At one point last month, the S&P was down by 45 percent YTD, but it’s struggled back to about 40% as of yesterday.
Sort of reminds me of the exchange in “The Simpsons Movie” when Bart says, “Oh man, this is the worst day of my life!” Homer replies cheerily, “Worst day of your life…so far!”
